Jun 21, 2019 (newstodate): Despite a troubled history with flights to Moscow, Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific may be mulling plans for a revival of services between the two destinations.
A Cathay Pacific webpage, "Discover more destinations", is including Moscow that is not currently on the carrier's route network, but may be under preparation.
Cathay Pacific fought a prolonged year-long battle from 2005 with Russian red tape while planning to add Moscow as a new destination from March 26, 2006.
Calling at Moscow Sheremetyevo, the carrier would serve Moscow three times weekly en-route with an Airbus A340 aircraft between Hong Kong and Manchester - but did not get Russian confirmation.
Undaunted by the negative experience, Moscow again sought approval from the Russian authorities to open traffic from summer 2010 between Hong Kong and Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport, aiming at introducing three weekly services with Airbus A340-300 aircraft - and finally got the go-ahead from September 1, 2010.
However, citing low demand in the market influenced by effects from the financial crisis and the generally deteriorating relations between Russia and the West, Cathay Pacific suspended services to Russia with the last flight on June, 1, 2015.
Maybe Cathay Pacific is now to make a fresh effort to revive the operation, yet unconfirmed.
