Jun 13, 2019 (newstodate): Today, Nepal has only one direct air link to Europe, provided by Turkish Airlines since September 2013. This may change..
According to Kathmandu Post, talks are being conducted between the Nepalese and Finnish governments in preparation for a bilateral air service agreement opening up for Finnair to launch direct non-stop flights between Helsinki and Nepal's Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport.
According to the media, Nepal's Tourism authority received a formal proposal from the Finnish government to sign an air service agreement three weeks ago, following talks with Finnair officials and the Finnish ambassador to Nepal two months ago.
Expectations are that a draft of the coming air services agreement will be presented in July for verification by the authorities involved, after which a final version as well as a time-frame for the process will be approved by the governments.
The volume of passengers through Kathmandu's airport has been growing by some 25 percent primarily due to rising number of tourists as well as an increase in number of Nepalese students in European countries.
Considered the gateway to the Himalayas, the airport is considered a challenge to pilots' navigation abilities over a rough mountainous approach and departure area as well as lacking in updated infrastructure.
