Jun 07, 2019 (newstodate): Finland's Lappeenranta Airport, some 30 km from the border with Russia, will be happy to see Ryanair expanding its services from winter 2910/20.
The LCC has announced plans for opening flights between Lappeenranta Airport and Budapest, Milan Bergamo and Berlin Schonefeld, tripling its passenger seat capacity compared to winter 2018/19.
During this summer, Ryanair is alone in serving the airport with flights to Milan Bergamo, Berlin Schonefeld, Thessaloniki and Athens.
Ryanair has earlier been operating flights to Lappeenranta from Barcelona and Dusseldorf, but pulled out entirely from the airport with the last flight to Bergamo on October 21, 2015.
The carrier however returned again from March 28, 2018, offering flights from Lappeenranta Airport to Milan, and from May 16, to Athens with Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Finland's Lappeenranta Airport left Finavia's network by Junuary 1, 2016, and has since struggled to attract airline operators.
The state allocated one mio Euro for subventions to seek an airline operator to set up traffic from the airport now under regional ownership - but time proved to be too limited to succeed in materializing the ambitions.
Earlier, hopes were that the proximity to Russia would create a role for the airport as a gateway for Russians into EU air services - but this did not materialize either.
