Now a proposal is circulating to rename Latvia's Riga Airport to Karlis Irbitis Riga International Airport, leaning on a growing trend to raise national heroes to fame by naming capital airports after them, such as lifting Kazakhstan's long-time ruler to glory by renaming Astana Airport to Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport.

In 1939, he developed the VEF I-16 fighter and later a sports aircraft.
In 1992, Mr Irbitis was awarded a title of honorary doctor, and died in Canada in 1997.
