May 27, 2019 (newstodate): Lithuania's state-owned company Lietuvos Oro Uostai, Lithuanian Airports, is to invest significantly in upgrading and expanding the country's largest airport at Vilnius.
Based on estimates of a sustained increase in traffic at Vilnius Airport, the company will invest euro 130 mio in the airport's infrastructure over the coming four years, including expansion of the passenger terminal northwards, expansion of the northern apron, and construction of a new VIP terminal.
Through these measures, the handling capacity will rise to 2,400 passengers per hour during peak times and 7.5 mio passengers per year, compared to the 4.9 mio passengers handled in 2018.
Vilnius Airport thus trails only after Latvia's Riga Airport in 2018 as to passenger volumes, with Riga handling 7.1 mio passengers.
Lithuania's 2nd largest airport at Kaunas Airport handled one mio passengers in 2018, while Palanga Airport handled 317,000 passengers.
Also in the Baltic region, Estonia's Tallinn Airport handled three mio passengers in 2018.
On the cargo side, volumes reached 12,800 tonnes in Vilnius, 3,100 tonnes in Kaunas, and four tonnes in Palanga.
Leading in the Baltic region was Latvia's Riga Airport with 28,200 tonnes in Riga, while Estonia's Tallinn Airport handled some 11,500 tonnes in 2018.
