May 24, 2019 (newstodate): Serbia is soon to reopen Morava Kraljevo Airport for commercial flights after a thorough development process.
June 28, 2019, has been set as the opening date of the airport that now has a runway extended from 2,200 to 2,750m, an updated passenger terminal and other new infrastructure.
Formerly a Serb air force base, Morava Kraljevo Airport had a new ATC tower in 2012, but the runway was still too short and narrow to accommodate operations with larger aircraft types such as Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 Family aircraft.
Optimistic estimates are that the airport will see some 20,000 passengers this year, growing to handling of 1-150,000 passengers in 2020.
No airlines have yet announced flights to the airport, but expectations are that low-cost carriers including Ryanair or Wizz Air may be on the list of potential operators.
Morava Kraljevo Airport is also eyeing a role in the air cargo industry, situated close to large industrial enterprises including FIAT Zastava.
