May 21, 2019 (newstodate): Year-long and dedicated efforts by Riga Airport to secure a position as a logistics hub for Chinese e-commerce has now produced results.
Atran Airlines, member of the Volga-Dnepr Group, is introducing a weekly freighter flight between Hangzhou, in China, and Riga Airport operated with a Boeing 737-800BCF providing up to 23 tonnes of cargo capacity for e-commerce shipments of Cainiao Network, the logistics arm of Alibaba Group.
The Atran Airlines freighter is operating via Moscow Vnukovo Airport, offering also access to interline routes and CIS connections for exports out of Riga, while incoming shipments through Riga Airport can be transferred to destinations in the EU markets.
-With the arrival of Atran, Riga Airport has become the first Baltic airport to be used for direct regular e-commerce cargo transportation to and from China, says Ilona Lice, Riga Airport CEO.
-It provides invaluable opportunities for both businesses and the economic cooperation between the Baltic region and China in general, especially considering that Atran will also provide a connection to Russia, thus providing new opportunities for Baltic exporters.
The new route was already presaged in May 2018 as Ms Lice told Latvian TV that the flights might commence by autumn 2018.
