May 23, 2019 (newstodate): Boding ill for Norway's large export of seafood, notably salmon, is the current blossoming of algae posing an imminent threat to salmon farming.
Current estimates are that the algae will result in a loss by some 20,000 tonnes of salmon in 2019.
-We are planning for an increase in Norway's production of salmon by around 70,000 tonnes in 2019, to 1.32 mio tonnes corresponding to a growth by five percent, says Paul Aandahl, Seafood Norway market analyst.
-Under the current algae threat, the first priority for salmon farmers is of course to evacuate as much of the salmon production as possible. It is thus too early to predict the losses finally incurred by the farmers, but preliminary figures indicate that some eight million salmon have so far died due to the algae.
-Held up against a normal production cycle, this would indicate that some 40,000 tonnes of salmon will eventually not reach the market, of which around half will be incurred in 2019, says Mr Aandahl.
