May 21, 2019 (newstodate): The EU Commission has inked two new aviation agreement with China.
A bilateral civil aviation safety agreement will remove unnecessary duplication of evaluation and certification activities for aeronautical products by the civil aviation authorities, reducing costs for the aviation sector, and facilitating market access of European aeronautical companies to the Chinese market.
A new horizontal aviation agreement with China recognizes the principle of EU designation, meaning that all EU airlines will now have the legal possibility to operate into China from any EU Member State with a bilateral air services agreement with China.
Till now, only airlines owned and controlled by a given member state or its nationals could operate between that member state and China.
The horizontal agreement will bring bilateral air services agreements between China and EU Member States into conformity with EU law.
In 2019, more than 30 airlines are connecting EU to China offering 84 city pairs, 475 weekly rotations and over 270.000 weekly seats.
Also more than 110 weekly freighter rotations now connect EU and China, accruing to almost 160,000 tonnes in 2018.
