May 03, 2019 (newstodate): The over-all drop by 1.7 percent in Copenhagen Airport's Q1/2019 cargo volumes on commercial airlines reflects a structural change in traffic.
Behind the figures is a significant increase in commercial carriers' cargo belly holds due to more passenger flights to more destinations and - not least - the introduction of new passenger aircraft types with ever-growing cargo belly capacity.
This volume actually increased by 8.8 percent, y-o-y, during the period, to a total of 31,515 tonnes, corresponding to 46 percent of all cargo on commercial carriers.
During the period January-March 2019, the airport's volumes on commercial freighters dropped 57 percent to 11,038 tonnes, cargo on trucks declined 1.7 percent to 19,688 tonnes, and mail volumes were also down by 8.3 percent to 5,952.
The airport thus sees its current strategy focusing on handling of cargo belly cargo with construction of new handling and terminal facilities warranted by developments in the market.
