May 08, 2019 (newstodate): In November 2016, Avinor first presented its plans for establishing a new dedicated seafood airfreight center at Oslo Airport.
Since then, the project has been on and off the agenda, and during recent months critical voices in the industry have questioned the need for Avinor to set up a new facility in competition with existing handling providers already catering to the seafood exports.
Avinor now also takes a balanced approach to the issue of realizing the project.
-The role of Avinor is to serve the Norwegian business community with new direct routes and efficient logistics facilities that are crucial to the market access for fresh Norwegian seafood, says Oyvind Hasaas, Avinor CEO, in a written statement to newstodate.
-The seafood industry and the airlines have jointly stressed the need for more and enhanced capacity for serving the seafood exports.
-Avinor is determined to heed these calls, and we are ready to invest in the groundwork for the planned seafood terminal, leaving investments in and operation of the facility to other parties.
-However, should it prove not to be a viable project, Avinor will not proceed further with the planned seafood terminal, says Mr Hasaas.
Handling the Norwegian seafood exports at Oslo Airport are today Roadfeeders, Spirit Air Cargo Handling, GPC, Menzies and DHL-
