Apr 04, 2019 (newstodate): With the demise of WOW Air, the position of Icelandair at Keflavik Airport is changing in 2019.
According to estimates by Keflavik Airport, Icelandair will offer 85 percent of the seats on routes between Iceland and USA this summer, while the market will be contracting by 40 percent.
Flights between Keflavik and European destinations will also shrink by 20 percent, and traffic between Iceland and the UK market will go down by one-third.
The big issue now is how the European carriers currently serving routes to Iceland will respond to the shortfall of WOW Air's capacity, and if newcomers will enter the market.
So far, only WIZZ Air has announced that they will increase their traffic to Iceland in summer 2019, while The first new airline to announce flights to Iceland in summer 2019 is the Dutch low-cost carrier Transavia, to offer three rotations on the route between Amsterdam and Keflavik starting from July 1, 2019
