Apr 30, 2019 (newstodate): The Syrian airspace, closed since the start of the civil war and the growing international military presence, is gradually opening up for commercial flights.
As one of the first new airlines to route flights through Syrian airspace is Qatar Airways that is now operating over Syria on routes between Qatar and destinations including Beirut, Lebanon and Larnaca, saving significantly on flight times and fuel consumption on alternative routings.
The admission to operate through Syrian airspace is granted on a reciprocal base under a bilateral agreement.
Qatar Airways is thus only the fourth commercial airline to operate over Syria, after MEA, Iraqi Airways, and Iranian Airlines.
