Apr 12, 2019 (newstodate): Norwegian is ready to launch new Asian routes from Scandinavia.
This will, however, hinge of obtaining open access to Russia's airspace to avoid long detours allowing the carrier to compete on equal terms with the Scandinavian carrier SAS that enjoys grandfather's rights in aviation talks with Russia.
Once again, Norwegian is pressing its case as the airline's CEO Bjorn Kjos is in Moscow to conduct "industry talks", as he names it on his twitter account.
As matters stand, SAS has for 60 years been the only designated carrier in the agreement between Russia and "Scandinavia", blurring the fact that today not only SAS, but other carriers registered in Denmark, Norway and Sweden are in the air with intercontinental flights to and from Asia.
The issue is especially crucial to Norwegian that has obtained rights to fly through Russian/European airspace on flights to Thailand but remains barred from flights on the Siberian air lanes that would allow for opening of flights to other Asian destinations including Singapore and China.
A new round in aviation talks between Scandinavia and Russia is slated for early 2019, and Norwegian will again be pressing hard for access to Russian overflight rights.
