Apr 10, 2019 (newstodate): After a prolonged delay, Albania may now see its new national carrier on the runway at Tirana Airport.
Plans are that Air Albania, established on May 16, 2018, will perform its first commercial flight by the end of this month, with Istanbul as its first destination.
In the fleet is now just one airbus A319 aircraft, but a second will join shortly, allowing for opening of new routes to Rome, Milan and Bologna in Italy, while London will be added to the route network at a later stage.
Supporting the setup of the coming new national carrier is Turkish Airlines that has been involved in a feasibility study to assess the needs and the markets as well as an initial route structure.
Albania has been without a flag carrier since 2011 when the country's Civil Aviation Authority revoked the AOC of Albanian Airlines.
