Apr 15, 2019 (newstodate): Long under way, the new green-field international airport at Saratov, in southern Russia, is now readying to opening ahead of the latest schedule.
Till now to be commissioned in September 2019, the airport may actually be opened for traffic already by August this year as 95 of the implementation of the passenger terminal area is now completed.
The new airport will have the capacity of handling up to one mio passengers and 3,900 tonnes of cargo annually, and operated with one 3,000m runway capable of handling most aircraft types.
The airport, 50 km from the city, will replace the existing Saratov Tsentralny Airport near to the city, and is conceived as a multi-modal air transportation hub for both passenger and cargo operations at international standards with capability to serve any type of aircraft.
Originally, plans called for completion of the first stage already in 2011, and full commissioning by 2014 - but the country's economic plights and the global recession forced a major delay in the process.
