Apr 24, 2019 (newstodate): According to Russian media, the Latvian carrier airBaltic will decide on exercising its option for a third batch of new Airbus A220-300 aircraft before the end of 2019.
Soon to be delivered, two of three more Airbus A220-300 aircraft for the Latvian carrier airBaltic are now amid their test flights program, with a third aircraft approaching the flight line.
Another two aircraft are on the final assembly line, while a sixth aircraft on order is approaching the assembly line as well.
The six aircraft will enter commercial service with airBaltic before the end of this year, completing the initial order for a total of 20 aircraft.
Next to follow is then production and delivery of the next batch of 30 Airbus A220-300 aircraft already on firm orders signed on May 28, 2018.
airBaltic, however, also holds option for another 30 aircraft, to bring the fleet to a total of 80 aircraft.
If all 80 aircraft are finally delivered, airBaltic would triple the number of passengers to 15 mio by 2025.
If the options are not exercised, passenger volumes would reach 8.8 mio, according to the airline's CEO.
In any case, even the fleet of 50 Airbus A220-300 aircraft would be far exceed the potentials in the three Baltic markets, seeing airBaltic to strengthen its role in the ACMI market as well as possibly setting up new bases outside the home market.
airBaltic was the launch carrier of the Bombardier CS300, later renamed Airbus A220-300, with its first CS300 on scheduled flights from December 14, 2016.
