Apr 16, 2019 (newstodate): Sweden's Jonkoping Airport saw some cargo growth in 2018 - but at a modest level..
A total of 3,415 tonnes of international cargo was handled at the airport, which was only two percent above 2018, but still the second-largest volume since 2007.
The modest increase in volumes in 2018 is primarily attributed to lack of uplift capacity as the current aircraft type operated by TNT does not allow for expansion.
Volumes handled at the airport during Q1, 2019, also do not so far bode overly well for this year's situation with a 10 percent decrease, y-o-y, affected by the current low-turn in the global trade which has a direct bearing on the airport's InNight traffic by time:matters and DAN'X that has been booming till now.
Apart from the international cargo, Jonkoping Airport was also thriving on domestic postal flights, but PostNord decided to close down a number of postal flights into Stockholm Arlanda from Vaxjo, Jonkoping and Umeaa by April 1, 2018.
On the positive side, Jonkoping Airport is seeing positive growth in ad-hoc charters, primarily serving the region's automotive industry.
Undaunted by the current relative stagnation, the airport is investing in infrastructural projects allowing for handling of larger aircraft as well as adding more parking stands for freighter aircraft - all preparing for faster handling and shorter turn-around times in the cargo traffic.
