Mar 14, 2019 (newstodate): Despite some bottle-necks, the Norwegian Seafood Council remains upbeat about prospects for a sustained growth in salmon exports to the Chinese market.
-Norway is taking positive steps in the salmon export to China, and ended 2018 as the second-largest supplier to the market, says Victoria Braathen, Norway Seafood Council Director China, based in Shanghai.
-Still, there are formal constraints and market preferences limiting Norwegian salmon to China. The Norwegian salmon export thus remains limited by veterinary restrictions to the China market.
-Moreover, there is a preference in the Chinese market for bigger-sized salmon, and while Norway is the biggest producer of larger salmon globally, together these factors continue to affect volumes available for this market.
-So far this year, Norway has exported 4,750 tonnes of fresh salmon to China, representing an increase of nearly 50 percent, y-o-y. The numbers are certainly pointing in the right direction, and we have high expectations and ambitions for the Chinese salmon market in the time to come, says Ms Braathen.
Despite vehement efforts by the Norwegian authorities to have an embargo lifted, the Chinese VET authorities still maintain a suspension on whole salmon from three important regions in Norway, Sar Trondelag, Nordland and Troms under suspicion of infected with Pancreas Disease or Infectious Salmon Anemia.
