Mar 07, 2019 (newstodate): Uzbekistan and Luxembourg have signed an Air Traffic Protocol.
With the new protocol streamlining issues of cargo, passenger and charter flights between the two countries in place, Cargolux prepares to launch transit cargo transportation to Asian countries through the international inter-modal logistics center in Navoi from 2020.
The new protocol follows up on agreement reached at the international conference Central Asia in the System of International Transport Corridors: Strategic Perspectives and Unrealized Opportunities, on September 19, 2018, where Vugar Nasibov, Cargolux Regional Director for CIS and Georgia, Cargolux Airlines International SA, was among the attendees.
-We are interested in expanding our presence in the Uzbek market, including in the transportation of goods through the Navoi International Airport, on the basis of which the International Inter-modal Logistics Center has been established, since we believe that it is ideally located for carrying out transport between Europe and Asia, Mr Nasibov said.
In August 2010, Navoi Airport commissioned a new cargo terminal with an annual capacity of handling up to 100,000 tonnes and providing a vital element in the plan to set up an international logistics center at Navoi as contained in the MoU between Uzbekistan Airways and Korean Air, signed in February 2008.
Since then, Uzbekistan Airways and Korean Air have built up cargo business through Navoi Airport, but plans to further develop the airport as a multi-modal transit hub for cargo traffic between Europe and Asia have so far failed to produce results, and cargo volumes have actually decreased over the last few years.
