Feb 22, 2019 (newstodate): Ukraine and Slovakia have shared interests in Ukraine's Uzhgorod Airport, on the Trans-Carpathian border between the two countries.
Plans, already aired in 2010, are to develop Uzhgorod Airport as a transfer cargo hub for imports of cargo from China and South Korea to the EU, with cargo terminals on both side of the border.
The regional administration has now received fresh proposals from foreign companies regarding the possibility of implementing projects for the reconstruction of the complex of buildings of the Uzhgorod Airport, the reconstruction and extension of the airport's runway 2,038 to 3,500 meter, the construction of a logistics center, and the involvement of airlines operating in the charter and cargo air transportation market.
Formerly an air force base, the airport has been inoperative during 2017-18 as the intergovernmental agreement between Ukraine and Slovakia on the transfer of responsibility for providing air traffic services and operation of Uzhgorod Airport expired on June 16, 2016, causing its only airline Motor Sich Airlines to suspended domestic services to Kiev.
In December 2018, however, the airport was re-certified by EASA and is now again able to receive air traffic - but so far no operation at the airport have resumed.
