Feb 28, 2019 (newstodate): Turkmenistan is to start construction of the country's seventh airport, at Kerki in the country's easternmost part, close to Uzbekistan. The plans have indeed been long in the drawer, first appearing in 2012, but are now included in the implementation of the National Civil Aviation Development Program of Turkmenistan for 2012–2030. The airport will be designed to handling of up to 100 passengers per hour and will ease the pressure on the country's other airports as well as provide connectivity to the region. Kerkin Airport will have a 2,700m runway equipped with modern ground-based flight support equipment to meet ICAO's Cat 1 requirements. Construction works will start from May 2019, and plans are to commission the new airport by April 2021.
