Feb 28, 2019 (newstodate): The launch of flights by Qatar Airways to its fifth Nordic destination, Gothenburg Airport, did not make an immediate strong mark on the airport's cargo statistics.
The carrier performed its first flights on the route between Doha and Gothenburg on December 18, 2018, introducing the Boeing 787-8 aircraft lifting some 20 tonnes of cargo on five weekly rotations.
In December 2018, Gothenburg airport handled a total of 1,296 tonnes of cargo, compared to 1,433 tonnes in December 2017.
In the first month of this year, the airport handled a total of 1,614 tonnes of cargo, which was actually down 17 percent, y-o-y- which still does not reflect the fact that Gothenburg Airport now has its first wide-body scheduled carrier in its network after many years with only narrow-body aircraft.
Besides aiming at generating a sound passenger business in Sweden's western market, the new flight by Qatar Airways is also aiming at attracting Norwegian exporters' shipments of fresh salmon to the global marketplace via Doha Airport, as a supplement to Qatar Airways' daily passenger flights from Oslo Airport as well its four three freighter calls from Oslo.
