Feb 12, 2019 (newstodate): Cargo volumes at Swedavia's three major international airports increased modestly in 2018, up 1.9 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 280,430 tonnes. Aggregating almost 70 percent of this volume was Stockholm Arlanda Airport that saw its volumes up by 4.3 percent, y-o-y, to 193,298 tonnes. At Stockholm Arlanda, exports increased by 3.7 percent while imports rose by five percent, compared to last year, and warranting a fairly balanced cargo operation. Among major news at Stockholm in 2018 was the start of China Eastern's route from June 16, 2018, offering four weekly rotations between Stockholm and Shanghai that ranks highest on Swedish exporters' Top-10 list. In 2018, 81 airlines offered flights between Stockholm Arlanda Airport and 181 destinations. In contrast to growth at Stockholm, the two other international airports at Gothenburg and Malmo fared less positively in 2018. Volumes were thus down 2.9 percent at Gothenburg Airport, to 63,208 tonnes, and volumes also dropped three percent at Malmo Airport, to 23,925 tonnes. 2019 will, however, presumably perform better at Gothenburg Airport after the launch of Qatar Airways' new flights from Doha starting December 12, 2018, offering five weekly rotations with Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Less optimism surrounds developments at Malmo Airport that is seeing only integrator, charter and low-cost flights after the loss of both ABC Airlines and Atran since 2016.
