Dec 16, 2019 (newstodate): After some speculation, it has now been confirmed: the Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air is entering the Armenian market in 2020.
Starting from April 2020, Wizz Air will launch flights from Vilnius and Vienna to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.
Flights will be performed with Airbus A320/A321 aircraft operating two weekly rotations for a start.
Earlier in December, the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia, speaking to members of the Armenian Parliament, said that a "yet un-disclosed" airline will launch services from summer 2020, initially offering flights to 13 destinations served by a total of 41 weekly rotations.
Wizz Air will thus become the second LCC to serve flights to Armenia, after Ryanair that will start operations to Yerevan and Gyumri from Milan, Rome, Berlin and Memmingen from January 2020.
Armenia introduced an open skies policy in 2013 and has since seen foreign carriers entering the market, while efforts by Armenia to sustain an own national carrier have failed repeatedly.
