Dec 18, 2019 (newstodate): The Romanian carrier Tarom will exit 2019 with alarmingly empty pockets requiring immediate action to keep it in the air.
The country's Transport Ministry is now turning to the EU Commission for approval of state aid to save the airline from a melt-down in 2020.
The ministry will apply for EUR 47 mio in support from EU, in addition to a Romanian state subsidy of another EUR 110 mio to save Tarom.
SkyTeam-member Tarom is operating a fleet of 25 aircraft, with orders for another 14 aircraft including nine ATR 72-600 urgently needed to modernize the fleet.
The airline has also committed to take delivery of five Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from 2023.
