Dec 02, 2019 (newstodate): The Mexican carrier Interjet was hailed as the first customer in the western hemisphere of Russia's Superjet 100 aircraft. Now this beacon is turning off..
The carrier has decided to end all Superjet 100 operating by the turn of the year, ending the service life of 21 aircraft of which only four are still in service.
The rest of the fleet has long been stuck on ground due to lack of maintenance, spares, components and technical support from Sukhoi.
In January 2011, Interjet signed a contract for the purchase of 10 Superjet 100 aircraft plus options for another five, and activated the five options in May 2012, bringing the firm orders to 20, while adding a further 10 options in November 2012.
The carrier will instead build its future on Airbus aircraft, currently operating 44 A320-200, six A320neo, six A321-200 and eight A321-200neo.
