Dec 06, 2019 (newstodate): Norwegian fresh salmon exports to China are picking up in market share after a challenging period.
Prior to the imposition in 2010 of a Chinese embargo on the trade due to issues with a Nobel Prize award, Norway provided no less than 90 percent of all fresh salmon imported by China, but then the proportion dropped to less than three percent.
Now, Norwegian exporters of salmon and other seafood products to China have gained in access to the market and a trade protocol for seafood exports from Norway to China has laid down quality standards easing the trade.
Norway has thus again gained in market share in the Chinese market, reaching some 22 percent in 2018 and expected to grow further to 36 percent in 2019.
By the end of November 2019, Norway's salmon export to China thus reached 22,366 tonnes against 10,994 tonnes in the first 11 months of 2018, an increase by 103 percent; totalling 12,643 tonnes volumes to Hong Kong were however down by 7.2 percent, reflecting the turbulent political situation developing over the last six months.
According to the Norwegian Seafood Council, Norway's total export of fresh salmon accrued to 866,651 tonnes during January-November 2019 - an increase by 6.4 percent, y-o-y.
