Dec 09, 2019 (newstodate): The largest island in Estonia, Saarema relies heavily on air transport solutions.
Plans are now surfacing for attracting a carrier to launch flights to Stockholm, with proposed three or four weekly rotations during the summer season for an initial three-years period, backed by local government subsidies.
In the meantime, problems still need to be sorted out on the issue of flights between Saarema and Estonia's Tallinn Airport.
Here, Estonia's Public Procurement Review Committee has changed tender conditions concerning a 20-year age limit for aircraft to allow the Lithuanian carrier Transviabaltika to operate its Jetstream 32 aircraft on the route as winner of the tender.
Transaviabaltika has been operating the route since 2016 after the demise of Avies that had its AOC revoked after failing to live up to safety requirements.
Not surprisingly, the change in the rules of the game has raised anger in another participant in the tender, Nordica's Regional Jet that operates a fleet of 12 CRJ700/900s and seven ATR72-600 that would meet the original tender conditions.
