Dec 16, 2019 (newstodate): Cabo Verde Airlines is determined to build its future on the experience drawn from its new majority owner, Icelandair.
The strategy will be to exploit the country's geographical position to build Cape Verde into a hub for transit traffic between the Americas, Africa and Europe.
-This is an ambitious project. Cabo Verde is a small country. Besides being on Cabo Verde Airlines, I belong to a group, Icelandair, from an even smaller country that has 300,000 inhabitants but a really strong hub. And it is this role model that we are bringing to Cape Verde, and this is what we want to turn Cape Verde into, Mario Chaves, Cabo Verde Airlines’ Deputy CEO, said in a speech at Porto Alegre Airport.
The airline now has six Boeing 757-200 aircraft in the fleet, planning to grow to 12 Boeing 757-200 aircraft by 2023.
In March 2019, Loftleidir Cabo Verde, owned 70 percent by Loftleidir Icelandic ehf, and 30 percent by Icelandic investors, acquired 51 percent of Cabo Verde Airlines after a period serving as strategic partner with Cabo Verde Airlines and the Government of Cabo Verde.
In co-operation with other subsidiaries of the Icelandair Group, Loftleidir Icelandic provided managerial support including network planning, marketing, sales and distribution planning as well as restructuring of Carbo Verdian carrier's fleet.
The restructuring process also aims at turning Ilha do Sal Airport into the carrier's main hub for traffic between Africa, North America and Europe.
