Dec 20, 2020 (newstodate): Denmark's Billund Airport expects to raise the bar again in 2019 when full-year statistics on air cargo are published.
-2019 has been a rather turbulent year with ups and downs, but it is now certain that 2019 will prove another year of cargo record, with some 1,000 tonnes above 2018 that was also a record year, says Jan Ditlevsen, Billund Airport VP Cargo.
-As everywhere in Europe, import volumes have decreased reflecting the generally bleak world trade outlooks and political uncertainties. But export volumes through Billund Airport have been steadily rising, also boosted by the country's green industrial clusters including large exporting companies such as Grundfos, Danfoss and the industries around the wind turbine manufacturers.
-Billund Airport is today generating cargo volumes from an expanding catchment area exceeding the 500 km-circle earlier seen as its home turf, documenting the airport's positive image for quality in handling and speedy processing.
-We are also happy to see the proportion of flown cargo growing steadily, not least thanks to Turkish Cargo's twice- weekly freighter service and the integrator traffic.
-Looking cautiously ahead, I see positive strokes for sustained growth in cargo at Billund Airport. We are following Amazon's build-up with a center only 50 km south of the Danish/German border as well as the new facility at Malmo, both poised to serving the Danish market where Billund Airport would of course be a centrally-placed airport partner. Also, news on a potential new air cargo business with uplift of fresh pork meat to the Chinese market might open new prospects for us.
-So all in all, we are closing in on a forthcoming festive holiday full of hopes for another booming year in 2020, says Mr Ditlevsen.
In 2018 Billund Airport handled a total of 73,221 tonnes of cargo - an increase by one percent, y-o-y.
