Dec 10, 2019 (newstodate): One of Iceland's four international airports, Egilsstadir International Airport in the eastern part of the country will be upgraded to allow for more international flight operations.
From the start of 2020, Isavia will take full control over the airport and allocate funds generated by Keflavik Airport to develop the infrastructure at Egilsstadir Airport.
Egilsstadir Airport will thus become in a position to attract more charter and scheduled international traffic as well as serve as an alternative to Keflavik Airport under adverse weather conditions.
Besides improved passenger facilities, Egilsstadir Airport will have a new taxiway allowing aircraft to exit the 2,000 m runway that is today also used for taxiing between apron and runway.
Air Iceland is the main carrier at the airport with domestic flights between Egilsstadir and Reykjavik.
