Nov 06, 2019 (newstodate): Not exactly good news from Sweden: cargo volumes through the three main airports were down 8.7 percent, y-o-y, during the first nine months of 2019.
A total of 187,843 tonnes of cargo was handled at the three airport of Stockholm Arlanda, Gothenburg Landvetter and Malmo Sturup, against 205,765 tonnes in the same period last year.
Bleeding the most was Stockholm Arlanda with a drop by 12 percent to 123,810 tonnes after the shortfall of much cargo capacity on passenger traffic, notably after SAS moved its Hong Kong-flights to Copenhagen from October 28, 2018.
The decline in volumes at Stockholm Airport is seen both in imports and exports, with imports especially hard hit.
Malmo Airport that relies on integrator traffic rather than general cargo saw cargo volumes down by 9.4 percent to 16,661 tonnes due to Sweden's general fall in exports this year.
Faring better was Gothenburg Airport where cargo was up 1.1 percent to 47,372 tonnes, benefiting from Qatar Airways' flights from Doha since December 12, 2018, offering five weekly rotations with Boeing 787-8 aircraft.
For Gothenburg Airport, the import volumes have dropped, while exports are still thriving.
