Nov 29, 2019 (newstodate): On November 28, the Scandinavian carrier SAS took delivery of its first of eight Airbus A350-900 aircraft to replace the seven ageing Airbus A340-300 fleet, which will be retired as the A350 join the fleet.
The first A350 will be followed by deliveries of the second and third aircraft by spring 2020, and the fourth aircraft by autumn/winter 2020.
The remaining four aircraft on firm orders will then be delivered in 2021.
The airline will base its first A350 aircraft in Copenhagen, with the first flight using the new aircraft operated to Chicago on January 28, 2020.
Later, the airline will assign the new aircraft to flights from Copenhagen to Beijing, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and San Francisco.
SAS has thus become the second airline in the Nordic region with Airbus A350 aircraft, after Finnair that received its first aircraft from Airbus on October 7, 2015, as the first European operator of this aircraft type, now operating 14 A350-900 aircraft, with five more to come.
Starting from 2021, SAS will receive three Airbus A321LR aircraft to further supplement the long-haul fleet.
In the fleet are also nine Airbus A330-300 aircraft including five A330-300 Enhanced with longer range and higher maximum take-off weight.
