Nov 27, 2019 (newstodate): Hot on the heels of news from the Chinese carrier Juneyao Airlines on extension of the route between Shanghai and Helsinki to Manchester and Dublin comes yet another surprise this morning: Iceland.
The carrier will thus launch flights between Helsinki and Keflavik from March 29, 2019, exploiting the remaining two of seven weekly rotations into Helsinki on Tuesdays and Saturdays after flights between Helsinki and Manchester on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and flights between Helsinki and Dublin to be performed on Sundays and Thursdays.
In all three cases, Juneyao Airlines be exercising 5th Freedom Rights allowing for bookings between Helsinki and the new European destinations.
Juneyao Airlines will be the first carrier to offer connectivity from Iceland to China, long sought-after also by exporters of Icelandic seafood to the Chinese market and rumoured already since last year.
In 2014, Iceland and China signed a Free Trade Agreement that has now been substantiated by the signing this year of three new protocols allowing Icelandic salmon farmers to start export of seafood, notably salmon, to China.
The flights by Juneyao Airlines between Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Helsinki Airport are performed with Boeing 787-9 aircraft offering up to 20 tonnes of cargo capacity on fully-booked passenger flights.
