Oct 17, 2019 (newstodate): The Polish carrier LOT is building up at neighbouring Hungary's Budapest Airport as its second base.
The driver for opening long-haul and European routes from Budapest is primarily the inadequacy of potentials for expansion at Poland's Warsaw Airport.
Another driver, however, is ambitions by LOT to strengthen a presence at Budapest Airport to emerge as a successor to Hungary's earlier national carrier Malev that folded its wings early in 2012 with Martin Gauss, now airBaltic CEO, at the helm.
To bolster this image as a new Hungarian carrier, LOT has plans to set up a subsidiary in Hungary with a Hungarian AOC and operating licence, benefiting from the support of the Hungarian state.
