Oct 28, 2019 (newstodate): Icelandic media claim that several projects for direct flights between China and Iceland are in the air.
Reports are that the Chinese LCC Juneyao Air plans to add flights to Keflavik as an extension of the existing route between Shanghai and Helsinki, in Finland, operated since June 28, 2019, with daily rotations during the summer schedule using Boeing 787-9 aircraft with up to 20 tonnes of cargo capacity with a full cabin.
Other reports indicate that Air China and Beijing Capital Airlines are also mulling plans for flights from Beijing to Iceland.
A fourth Chinese carrier, Tianjin Airlines is said to have applied for slots at Keflavik Airport with three weekly flights as an extension of a planned route between Wuhan and Helsinki, rumoured already earlier this year for launch during the current winter 2019/20 schedule - but still unconfirmed.
If any of these plans actually materialize, the start of direct flights from Iceland to China would provide a significant boost to Iceland's seafood exports to the Chinese market through the opening of new seafood logistics channels.
In 2014, Iceland and China signed a Free Trade Agreement that has now been substantiated by the recent signing of three new protocols allowing Icelandic salmon farmers to start export of seafood, notably salmon, to China.
