Jan 21, 2019 (newstodate): Scheduled flights between Japan and Iceland may seem a distant vision popping up repeatedly.
In the recent days, a delegation from Iceland comprising representatives from Iceland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Transport and Municipal Affairs as well as airlines Icelandair and the cargo ACMI carrier Air Atlanta have been meeting in Tokyo with representatives of the Japanese authorities.
On the agenda were issues of mutual interest for developing scheduled passenger and cargo services between the two markets.
Agreement was reached on conditions for opening of scheduled air services as well as charter flights, and the two parties agreed on working on a new air services agreement.
Since 2014, Japan Air Lines has performed series of seasonal charter flights from Tokyo and Osaka to Iceland carrying, however, only Japanese tourists into Iceland, while the flights have not been available for sales in the Icelandic market.
In September 2005, meetings between the Japanese foreign minister and his Icelandic colleague visiting Japan with a business delegation also aired the intentions to open up for direct air services, while talks also comprised working out an air services agreement "within a few years"..
While the size of Iceland's market for passenger flights might not warrant a direct service, the driver could be exports of fresh Icelandic fish to the Japanese market, with other products including Icelandic hi-tech industries on the sideline as well.
