Jan 14, 2019 (newstodate): WIZZ Air is reining in on services at Lithuania's Vilnius Airport.
In October 2018, the carrier ceased operating the route opened in summer 2017 from Vilnius to Warsaw, the route to Gdansk is being axed from this week, and flights to Gothenburg will also be suspended from the end of this month, while the carrier's route to Stockholm Skavsta Airport will also be closed from the end of March 2019.
WIZZ Air established Vilnius Airport from April 17, 2010, with flights to Stockholm Skavsta, London, Barcelona, Cork, Doncaster, Eindhoven, Milan and Rome, starting out with one Airbus A320 at the new base.
From May 2012, the carrier allocated a second Airbus A320 aircraft to Vilnius Airport to facilitate the opening of other new routes to Bergen, Oslo, Paris, and Liverpool.
From October 2015, the carrier allocated a fourth Airbus A320 aircraft at Vilnius to facilitate the opening of flights to its new destinations from Lithuania to Billund, Munich-Memmingen, Stockholm, Glasgow and Kiev.
WIZZ Air however downsized to the fleet from four to three aircraft again in October 2018, and with the latest route cuts there is little evidence that the fourth aircraft will return to Vilnius Airport, as earlier announced.
