Sep 6, 2018 (newstodate): Contrary to earlier information, air traffic at Istanbul Ataturk Airport will not be fully closed down after the opening of the new 3rd and yet-unnamed airport to serve Istanbul.
According to Turkish media, the country's president has said that rather than moving all commercial flights from Ataturk to the new airport as of October 31, 2018, a transition period will allow for a gradual shifting of operations from Ataturk to the new airport.
It was earlier confirmed that all-cargo operations will remain at Ataturk Airport for a period, while handling of belly cargo will be concentrated at the new airport.
-Plans by Turkish Cargo are to initially keep the handling of all freighters at the current position at Istanbul Ataturk Airport when the new airport is commissioned by the end of October 2018, Turhan Ozen, Turkish Airlines CCO & Chief Cargo Officer, told newstodate in July 2018.
-From the start, all passenger aircraft operations will move to the new airport, and handling of belly cargo and freighter cargo will thus be kept apart until mid-2019 when our freighter operations will move to the new airport as well, finally having all cargo operations within the same infrastructure, Mr Ozen said
