Sep 05, 2018 (newstodate): Shortage of pilots in Russian airlines has now made the country's Rosaviatsiya to allow more foreign captains in the cockpits.
A quota of 210 foreign pilots has now been opened for distribution among the country's carriers, with the Aeroflot Group taking the bulk of the new permits.
Thus Aeroflot will itself be allowed to hire 30 foreign pilots while the Group's other airlines Pobeda will take in 50 and Rossiya 30 foreign pilots.
UTAir has been granted allowance for 35 foreign pilots, and Red Wings and Azimut will take 10 each.
On the cargo side, ABC has been allowed a quote of 30 pilots, and Aviakon Zitotrans five pilots.
In an amendment to the law in summer 2014, Russia for the first time allowed Russian carriers to hire up to a total of 200 foreign pilots and captains per year, and Aeroflot alone received more than 800 applications from pilots, primarily in the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and Spain.
A recent study published in 2018 estimates that Russia will generate an annal shortage of 3-500 pilots, calling for immediate solutions to cover up for the growing gap.
The shortage of pilots is caused not least by a massive recuitment by Chinese carriers tempting Russian pilots with wages twice the Russian levels.
