Sep 18, 2018 (newstodate): Macedonia is fighting to enhance air connectivity with Europe through opening of new routes.
A fresh effort will now be made by announcing an incentives scheme offering direct state support to lure foreign airlines to set up new routes to the country's airports.
The new program is planned to take effect from January 1, 2019, already.
An earlier attempt to attract airlines through an open tender for specific routes failed as only one carrier filed for participation.
Over the years, several efforts have been made to set up a national airline in the country, including MAT Macedonian Airlines, but so far all have failed.
In 2017, the country's capital airport at Skopje handled a total of 1.9 mio passengers, an increase by 13.3 percent, y-o-y.
