Sep 14, 2018 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Almaty Airport needs a complement to provide capacity for future growth.
Plans for construction of a new international airport to serve the country's old capital have long been in the air - and are now shaping up.
A new airport project will thus be presented, backed by external financing from a strategic investor, probably in Singapore.
According to the Ministry of Investment and Development, MG Holding has developed a draft intergovernmental agreement between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Singapore to build an international aviation hub near Almaty.
The airport to be located some 50 km from the city center is planned to have a capacity of 10 million passengers annually with projections of up to 40 million, and the sovereign wealth fund of Kazakhstan, Samruk Kazyna, has been designated as the principal Kazakh investor.
