Sep 18, 2018 (newstodate): After an 11 years lapse, Albania is again seeing a national carrier in the sky.
Air Albania has performed its first commercial flights on the first route connecting Tirana to Istanbul in Turkey, and the route network will soon expand with flights from Tirana to Rome, Istanbul and London, later adding also flights to Brussels, Athens, Milan, Munich and Barcelona.
On July 31, 2018, an Airbus A319 aircraft was placed with Air Albania under a wet-lease contract with Turkish Airlines, and the launch of the new carrier is widely seen as a result of direct personal interventions by the Turkish president and Albania's prime minster meeting on several occasions with the airline project on the agenda.
Albania has been without a flag carrier since 2011 when the country's Civil Aviation Authority revoked the license of Albanian Airlines.
