Sep 10, 2018 (newstodate): Loooong underway, the new green-field international airport at Saratov, in southern Russia, is now slated for opening by 2019.
Expectations are now that the airport will be opened on September 30, 2019, after conclusion earlier this month of a series of tenders.
The airport, 50 km from the city, will replace the existing Saratov Tsentralny Airport near to the city, and plans aim at establishing the new airport as a multi-modal air transportation hub for both passenger and cargo operations at international standards with capability to serve any type of aircraft.
The airport is designed to the annual capacity of handling 1.3 mio passengers and 3,900 tonnes of cargo.
Originally, plans called for completion of the first stage already in 2011, and full commissioning by 2014 - but the country's economic plights and the global recession forced a major delay in the process.
