Aug 28, 2018 (newstodate): China is fighting to pin international air services to Taiwan on its national map. But Taiwan is fighting back..
China has informed all airlines serving flights to Taiwan to make sure that Taiwan is named part of the People's Republic of China, rather than any allusion to Republic of China or even just Taiwan.
The government of Taiwan first urged all citizens to avoid traveling on airlines bending to China's pressure, but new measures will now be enforced.
Taiwan may thus consider revoking attractive slots from airlines bending to China's whim, or refuse the use of air bridges at Taipei International Airport to airlines changing the designation of their Taiwanese destinations.
At the same time, airlines that stick to Taiwan as designation may benefit from lowered airport charges.
Apart from China Airlines and EVA Airlines, the only international airlines currently operating flights into Taiwan are Air France, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Air Canada, and United Airlines.
