Aug 15, 2018 (newstodate): Few airports can match the growth in cargo volumes generated by Latvia's Riga Airport in January-July 2018.
In the first seven months of 2018, the airport has seen its total cargo volumes up by no less than 30.8 percent, y-o-y, to 16,319 tonnes.
July 2018 did not, however, itself contribute to the hike, with volumes down 16.3 percent to 1,966 tonnes.
According to Riga Airport, the drop in July 2018 was primarily due to a drop in volume of flights to Afghanistan, but in July 2017 Turkish Cargo also launched its twice-weekly Airbus A330-200F operations at Riga Airport, which affects the statistical comparison.
This service was moved to Lithuania's Vilnius Airport from April 19, 2018.
-Even so, volumes in the first two weeks of August 2018 are again up by 18.7 percent, y-o-y, proving that cargo through Riga Airport is still growing despite the loss of the Turkish Cargo freighter operation, says Eligijus Jentkus, Riga Airport Deputy Director Aviation Services and Business Development.
