Aug 14, 2018 (newstodate): The country's largest cargo airport, Poland's Katowice Airport has been doing well in H1 2018.
The airport has seen its total cargo volumes up by 12.6 percent, y-o-y, during January-June 2018, to 9,339 tonnes.
The cargo traffic is primarily generated by integrators DHL Express with freighter flights to Leipzig, UPS with freighter flights to Cologne/Bonn, TNT to Liege, and FedEx to Paris.
Katowice Airport benefits from its location ideally suited to provide coverage of southern Poland as well as parts of Bohemia and Slovakia.
To provide fresh potentials for development, the airport is now working on construction of an expanded cargo apron, and in the plans are also construction of a second cargo terminal pending the final decision later in 2018.
In May 2016, the airport commissioned a new 12,000 sq m cargo terminal and an aircraft apron allowing for simultaneous parking of two freighters the size of Boeing 757-200F.
Another development will add cargo parking space for four Airbus A320/ Boeing 737 aircraft, to be completed by October 2018, and more apron space is already under planning.
In 2017, Katowice Airport handled a record-high total of 17,779 tonnes of cargo - a record already being threatened after this year's first half results.
