Aug 03, 2018 (newstodate): Moldova has put its national carrier Air Moldova up for sale.
The sales period started from July 27 and will expire on September 4, 2018, according to information published by its current owner, Public Property Agency.
While the suggested price tag, 2.9 mio USD, has been set at the low end, the successful new owner will face the obligation to foot the airline's debts pile accruing to another 72 mio USD.
The country has seen a growth in the number of passengers through Chisinau Airport, but the growth is mostly spurred by international carriers.
Moldova is not an EU member, so its national carrier is limited by international regulations to third- and fourth-freedom traffic rights. All flights must therefore start or end at the country's only international airport of Chisinau.
This restriction does not apply to other European airlines, where especially the Hungarian LCC carrier Wizz Air has expanded its operations significantly.
Wizz Air first opened flights to Moldova in September 2013, becoming the first carrier to introduce low-cost operations in the market, and set up its 26th operational base at Chisinau in March 2017.
In the fleet of Air Moldova are three Embraer ERJ190, two Airbus A319 and two A320 aircraft.
The carrier further plans to add one or two more aircraft in 2018.
