Aug 31, 2018 (newstodate): Latvia's Liepaja Airport's hopes to attract more air traffic may find a new venue.
According to Latvian media reports, the deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Transport of Latvia, Uldis Reimanis has aired the possibility of seeing flights on a new route at Liepaja Airport connecting Latvia and Belarus.
The plans would see the opening of a route between Liepaja and Minsk, the capital of Belarus, complementing, or replacing, the current flights between Minsk and Palanga, at the Latvian Baltic coast, 72 km from Liepaja.
Talks will reportedly be conducted with the Belarus carrier Belavia, aiming at start of services from summer 2019.
Starting from June 19, 2016, Belavia has been operating seasonal flights between Minsk and Palanga with two weekly rotations.
Following the completion of the long process of airport reconstruction works and certification, Liepaja Airport, 210 km west of Riga, was reopened for non-commercial aviation services from May 26, 2016, and fully open for regular commercial traffic from September 19 - but restricted to summer traffic only.
Now with year-round operations, the airport hopes to attract new carriers to offer flight services to Latvia's western region.
So far, the only carrier with scheduled flights at Liepaja Airport is airBaltic that returned domestic flights between Riga and Liepaja from May 16, 2017.
